Any time you enter a legal obligation with anyone you should ob

tain legal advice. Many say they can’t afford a lawyer or they are only in the studio to cut an album.

You may only be making an album in the studio but who does the right to the music belongs to? Who owns the production of the music or songs? Do you have any rights to shop the music and if so what percentage will you receive of any gratuity paid out?

The above are a few things to consider in deciding if you need a lawyer and if so at what point you should have one. The music industry is a cut throat industy and always has been. It is wise to seek legal counsel in any legal matters or money matters. You might think you can’t afford a lawyer, but can you afford not to have one?

The same goes for if you are producing beats, writing lyrics or rapping. It is not wise to get caught up in the hype over someone else’s’ notoriety of being a great producer or a known entertainment group or record label. People are most likely more interested in the money they can make than your wealth.

Before entering into the world of music, decide if you are going to be an independent artist or have someone to manage your career, (there is nothing wrong with one or the other, but it is a good thing to decide to minimize confusion for yourself and others). It is possible to manage your own career which makes you both the boss and employee. You would have full control over all your steps and financial successes.

Some bosses wisely hire consultants to help them in areas that are unfamiliar to them or to alleviate some of the worries of being a boss. In this case, you should consider someone you can trust to give you full guidance in whatever area you hire them to be your consultant. A consultant advises you on what is best for your career. You can either agree or disagree to go with their decision (you are the boss).

If you decide to be an employee, then you are giving someone full reign over your career. You are not in a position to boss the boss. You either go along with your boss’ decisions or get fired.

A rapper who has decided to go under a record label has essentially hired someone to be their boss and thereby becomes their employee. The manager then decides what is best for you to do as far as deciding what song to put out, album to release, and appearances to make at what performances. Therefore, you should trust the boss you have decided to guide your career. Do research before you sign up with someone and don’t be afraid to ask for references.

What is inside of you? What does your mind tell you to do? If you search deep within you have all the answers about how to bring your dream(s) into existence. Before you were conceived the answer was within you. We have all allowed things and people to cover the truth with all shades and misconceptions at one time about our lives. Miracles and dreams aren’t mishaps they are deliberate thoughts and determined actions. Often our own fears and the fears we allow others to instill in us that keep us from making our dreams a reality. Be very careful what you let others speak into your spirit and you receive that message as truth. The universe will supply all you need materially and surround you with the people who were meant to be in your life for a purpose.

Thank you Push for another intriguing blog that makes me think deep into what is really going on in this life. You continue to give it to us straight. I and so many of my sistahs need a writer who is not afraid to shoot from his hip. Perhaps that is why people get so messed up in their heads – no one wants to write what they really feel- so afraid of loosing readers. Stop treating me like glass that can break instead treat me like a flower that need nourishment to grow- without it we will die – die to originality, our creativity, our future generation and to ourselves.

Christianity is portrayed in a bad light these days. Many churches have denounced the Christianity name and have gone nondenominational leaving any traces of the Christianity stigma. “Christianity” in this country was originally set up to keep slaves in line and it worked for many, many, many years – then slaves started reading, writing and understanding – that is a blog right there.

Ole skool music has class. Ole skool music talks about real love, unconditional love, love that stays with you no matter what. There was no telling your man to pack his bags and step to the left. In Ole skool songs a man wasn’t ashamed to say baby I was wrong, I am sorry, beg for forgiveness, stay in bed and cried together with his woman.

Mothers have nurtured and taught their son values for so long by themselves that we some times forget that when we fall in love with a man- a real man- he doesn’t need a mother to raise him – he needs his woman to love him. So many women have been alone for so long and had to hold the household together, working, cooking and loving the children –sometimes learning to satisfy themselves sexually, spiritually and emotionally until confusion set in and it is hard to separate what being a woman is and let men be men. We got it in our heads that we don’t need a man. I was a victim to that wrong thinking for a short time. We say we want a man and pray for a man so we get any kind of man then ask the creator why. The creator gives us what we need and after our need is fulfilled and if we are still in line with the creators will- we sometimes get what we want. I wonder why there are any men confused about being a man. Why is there an issue about manhood? Is part of the confusion about what it takes to be a man is because of what women have made of them as boys?

Black literature has taken a turn in romance with our soap opera stories of infidelity and mayhem in so many of our books-we write it and feed it constantly to our readers because it sells; “Real black love” is not made up like that. How do we get back to what real love is all about? I even heard some people mention they admire the love between Michelle and Barack Obama- is it love or a business relationship? We don’t really know them- we can only hope. Why do we need a couple to model after and if we did -why a couple that we don’t know? Have we strayed so far from home that we have no back to look back too? Don’t hate me- I only want you to look deeper into whatever love truly is.

Do you know who you are and to whom you belong? Until you can answer that question honestly how do we begin to love ourselves, again?

A friend who felt he was betrayed by his mom who had told his secret to other family members asked me, "If you can't trust your own mom who can you trust?"

How many times have you had the sudden urge to tell someone something that was burning deep down inside of you - if you didn’t say it –it felt like you would explode? Who do you tell? Who do you trust with your secrets when you couldn’t trust yourself not to engage in the act of, “Whatever?”

I have found that if it is such a secret- it is better not to tell anyone because it is a selfish act to burden someone else with the responsibility of keeping your secrets, “Whatever”. As a writer you should be writing it down. Lock it away in a secret hiding place or better - put it in a bottle and toss it in the ocean. A secret once it is told is no longer a secret. Secrets done in the dark will come to the light- in time. The same would apply to trust and/or faith- trust no one and then no one can betray your trust. Trust encompasses faith, belief, hope, confidence, and expectation. Believe or have faith in and for yourself and others will see it and believe. When others don’t meet our expectation we say they have let us down and betrayed our trust. It is unfair to put trust in others. I am not saying that people should not have responsibility. People should be accountable for their actions. And if we all would be responsible and accountable to humanity then the trust would certainly be there.

If it is something you need done- do it yourself or follow it through with the one you have given the responsibility to do it. A person may trust you for one act and not the next. With man trust can be a fleeting emotion given different circumstances. Do you trust yourself no matter what the circumstance-life or death?

I trust you to be you.

It both vindicates and reassures me that I am not paranoid when it comes to writing about what some groups call questionable characters or material.

I self published two poetry books that I had taken to a Christian based book company to type and book bind; and I was told that the contents were to street oriented and graphic. I was using a local company and it was so easy to keep track and go a couple of miles to see the progress of my books; I didn’t want to source my manuscript out by mail. Anxious to get my book published and too lazy to do research to find another publishing company it was easier for me to change the content of the poems and pushed it out. Right there I should have known better than to be anxious; I believe a person should not be anxious for anything and laziness is a deadly sin.
As a result of taking out words here and there the poems to me were not as powerful as originally written. I lost emotions I had felt at the time I had first written the words down- pen to paper. When you are too compliant, too lazy, too dependent on others you sacrifice what could be a great product.

I have a problem with some markets that refuse to let you publish work that is merely telling what is really happening in that market. Things happen to all people of different religions, sex and genders and I don’t understand the restrictions placed on writers not to write about it. Whatever!! What to do? Go somewhere else, do the research, write what you feel and how you feel it, don’t neglect the need to write it to be accepted.

Is it karma that causes one to pursue accusatory accusation continually until the hypercritical and self blame is exposed of oneself? Our guilty conscious will call us out. When you intentionally go against your own belief system, some how subconsciously perhaps, your wrong doings will be known consciously. No matter how hard you try you can not run from who you are.

A writer should not only write from the heart but from the depth of their soul; it is then you will have a monumental effect on your readers. As a writer my syntax is not always and probably never ever correct, my hyperbole is overtly on the cutting edge, and my metaphors are stupendous so the mixture of it all may not meet the standard of literary worth. Thank God for editors who can bring all the elements of a good read from a “bad writer” to full circle. If I worry about all that is wrong with my writing then I lose the enthusiasm I feel to write what is burning in my soul to produce. Writing is more than words; it is a form of communicating with others taking them places by illuminating their minds to unleash feelings, possibilities, and abilities.

I don’t want my editor to correct my syntax until it is no longer me that is talking but now it is the editor turning it into what they think I am trying to convey to my reader. I want my readers to understand what I am writing and I want my words to keep them wanting for more. I want the readers to feel what I have felt and see what I have seen. Words are powerful. At this moment I am thinking of words that Mohammad Ali said, “I can knock someone down without lifting a hand.” Writing gives me the power to heal, encourage, and build by the words that I write.

I thought about how nice it would be to leave my 9 to 5 to write books, but reality set in for me and it didn’t take long for me to smile and I kept on shuffling papers on at work. There were days when thoughts were overflowing and I wanted to put it on paper before I lost it forever and time, people and responsibility wouldn’t allow me to do so. Frustration on the job cause me to continuously pray for the time when I could retire from the monotony of a job; I wanted to indulge in the swimming pool of ideas to splash across pages with my black ink. Again, reality set in and I would hammer away at the keys on my desk at job that was less than fulfilling to my thought process.

I admire those who have the courage to leave their security jobs for the writing career. For those who are force to leave by the sudden loss of their jobs how bless they are not having to make that decision, though cruel and scary it may be, now they have the time to pursue what they really want. I am not praying that I lose my job, call me a chicken, but I don’t know what I will do about my mortgage, light, gas, water and food. Is it possible I don’t have enough confidence in my own work? Is it possible the baby that I love is only a hobby to me and nothing more? Hhmm!!!

A synopsis is like a road map giving directions to a destination. Sometimes on the road we run into some unexpected detours that cause us to have to change directions, but we stay the course until we arrive to the place that will give us satisfaction, security and peace. A synopsis gives others the sense of knowing and confidence that we know where we are headed. It gives others the choice of publishing our book, reading it or trashing it. It doesn’t matter what others may say or feel about our work; ultimately it is what we feel about our own product. I guess it boils down to why, what and whom are you writing for. If you are writing because of the passion you feel to write you can say, “whatever” to how others feel or might think and continue to produce. When you write what is burning in your heart, someone else will feel the fire.

I like that title, "Ready or Not"; it has so much profundity and attitude. The key to being ready is preparation. How we prepare ourselves for the journey is an indication more times than not of what we will and others will get out of it. If we put in a little time for writing we get a little inkling of what is to be, but if we put in a lot of time, effort and passion we will reap basket full of joys, praise and so much more. It is not a time for writers to get prepared- it is a time to be prepared for all that is in stored for us. It is a powerful thing to have the world in our hands; using only a pen and paper to serve, protect and nurture.

Changes are inevitable so we need to be preparing for the worst and best of times. The worst times can be your best times because it is then that we put our all into our craft to protect what is ours and to survive. A writer doesn’t have to have pen and paper; we will use whatever we have in our hands to write down what is in our hearts and minds. We will carve out our message with a sharp object on the walls or a mountain. We will use our fingers and etch out a message in the sands to get the attention of our readers. We will use the keys on our lap tops to send out codes into cyber space if that is what it takes but we will continue to write using whatever is in our hands because we got something to say and someone want and need to read it.

Rejection is just a way of stirring up our creative juices. Rejections shakes us, shapes us and surprises us because we thought that our stuff was the epitome of what other authors could only strive to achieve in their writing careers. When our juices are stirred we begin to dig deeper in our inner self to produce better work, quality work and work that is beyond egotistical prototype. We become more in tune with the universe when we are shaken. Our mind stretches when our hard work is discarded by others. When we can’t get anyone to take notice of our work instead of fighting we start writing and pour out our souls until the words we write becomes three dimensional reaching to touch the literary world with a bang. Ready or Not, we are more than ready we are prepared to write it all down.

Family is what this life is all about. We are all connected and we are one big family. How we treat each other is how we really feel about ourselves. How can we say we love God, our creator and hate our brothers and sisters who we see everyday? When we start giving of ourselves in love we will see more fellowship between each other. As writers, we grow and nurture each other by our writings, feedbacks, encouragement and support. We are responsible for our readers by what we feed their minds. Writing is an important tool that can be used to change the world. We can say a lot of things and the people may forget what was said, but when we write it down the words are embedded in the mind of the readers. Words written down can always be reference in books. When words are written down our families and friends can always have us at their fingertips. Authors, writers, self-publishers are powerful in that we can reach out and touch the world. We can bring people (family) together by the words we write.

Wendy, I sense your pain and your need to release all the negativity that has been tossed your way. While reading your post, I also realize the opportunities that are opening up for writers like yourself who have so much to give.

Your time, our time is now to shine. There is a scripture that says, "A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children, but the wealth of the sinner is stored up for the righteous". By no means am I calling people in the publishing houses sinners. There are times when others will lay the ground work for us without knowing they are doing so and it allows us to walk right in and take over (become the top men/women in the industry).

The times we are rejected or unable to complete the mission, I believe it is simply not our time to shine. During times of rejection we should be preparing ourselves for the time when the light is on us.

You are absolutely right not to carry that baggage into 2009. I will say- take what you need from the experience that is good and useful and drop the rest.

It is not a time to give up. I agree with you that it is a time to persevere and continue the work that we are purpose to do in this life.

Don't wait for anyone to open the door for you- Knock and if the doors don't open push it open, knock it down, if there is a crack in the doorway put your foot in so it can't close. Whew!!! And if the door still won't open make your own path, build your own door for your creativity house. Our creator open doors no man can shut, but we have to put our hands to the plow and work. Our creator will bless the things we touch with our hands if it aligns with the purpose and will for our lives.

We can not let what the world says about the economy stop us from producing. We conquer not capitulate and victorious not victims. Opportunity is not only given to you- you can make your own opportunity by doing and keep doing what you are meant to do and enjoy doing.

When you are giving birth to your work you got to push with the labor pains to get it out. Push to release the beautiful baby, that book you spent day and night toiling to birth.

Time elapses, seasons change and we must stay in the game to win. We cannot afford to give up our writing craft. Our children and our children’s children survival is depending on our wisdom that we will pass on to them. This is a time when we should be writing and reading more- to explain and to learn what is going on- and what is to be in the future. With our pen we can guide a generation back into a prosperous economy.
Encourage everyone to pick up a book. There is no greater time and better way to reach more people than with the internet. Doing business a new way is the way of the future. In our hands we have the power and control by developing or utilizing print- on -demand companies or putting e-book on your website. Creativity is in our bones. What else can we do to keep our craft vibrant? We can choose and reach a larger audience at our very finger tips. Online seminars, engage in chat rooms about our books, talk to book clubs on line, have video conferences, do interviews on blogtalk radio, and sell books on line and so much more.
We don’t have to wait for big publishing companies to approve our work. We can say what we want to whomever we want- when we want. Your publishing date is the day you finish your manuscript. This is a great time to sell, sell and sell more. Give some books and good advice away free.

The title introduces your book to the readers. The title is a guide and focus tool for the writer. It keeps us on track about what we want to put out there for others to grasp, gasp at the name, and gallivant all over town telling others. A good title is good publicity; A way of promoting your product and selling it. It attracts the attention of readers searching for that perfect book. What is in a title? Everything!

My right now resolution is to write more, attend writing workshops and read what others have to say about the art of writing. Why wait for the new year to start writing more? Are you writing your book for your own pleasure or for others to read? If the answer to the question is for others to read and obtain information from your book -then how are you attracting readers? Book design is one way that we attract readers to pick up a book to read. I would say that a cover design is very important to draw attention. Should the book design reflect what the story is about? Many times book designs have nothing to do with the content of the book and readers are sometimes very disappointed. You may lose avid readers that were drawn to your books. It is a matter of choice about your book design. Leave options open when you talk to the designer about your book cover. Give at least two lay outs- one way is your take on the content and the other your reader’s opinion. Do something for the promotion of your book daily.

Are you to close to your manuscript to be objective? Just because you have a book in you and you put it on paper doesn't mean that your book is ready. Getting your book edit is money well spent. Hiring a professional rather than someone in your family or a friend is very important. An editor will not or should not overshadow your style. Your creative flow should shine through all the corrective errors. Your editor should get to know you and your flavor of words and not change the core of who you are in your writings.

A good editor will bring all your thoughts together in a way that makes sense to the reader. Sometimes when we are writing we are all over the place so it is the editors job to bring our thoughts into alignment of what the purpose, objective and story telling together in full circle.

After a thorough edit by a professional, your book will stand up to the tough scrutiny of distributors, reviewers, retailers, and libraries

WHATEVER...What does it take to stop domestic violence? Why do one person feel the need to verbally or physically abuse another person?

I have been a victim of domestic vioence. Verbal abuse is just as bad as physical abuse. I stayed in a marriage very briefly with a man who tried to destroy my self-esteem. He would ask me about my past relationships with men then take it and called me deragatory names. Any accomplishments I made talked about the events as if they were nothing. I am so grateful that I was at a point in my life that my self-esteem was so strong and his words did not penetrate my heart and mind. My faith and belief in my creator was built with a bond that could not be untied. I believe what my creatorsays about me- I am strong, I am powerful, I am beautiful, and I can do anything I st my mind and hands to do. I got out of the relationship because I had the faith and belief in my creator. Believe in yourself and your creator who made you perfect.

I love giving. It fulfills a need, desire, and passion within me. As young as twelve years old I recall giving to others buying gifts from my weekly allowance. I am happy when I give. Through all my years of giving I have not gone hungry, without shelter or food. The times when I stop giving of my time, love and money is when I felt broke and in despair. Give and you willl receive more than you can hold. It is in our nature to give. We are a part of a creative force that gives life

Peope are depressed because there is a need to do something that they are not doing. The mind, body or soul is being deprived and desperately yearning for growth, movement towards something nourishing, a need to eliminate all netativity fordes from its presence. Fear is at the root of depression. It can be an unknown fear based in the subconcious mind or a conscious fear to act. When we do not perform, move forward, or take progressive action we put pressure on ourselves. Depressed is the act of pressing down on one self. It causes one mind to become foggy, unclear to reason and stops our creativity. People around us can also press down on you until you become depressed. Depression is self pity. A need for others to look at you and feel sorry for you. Depression is under the umbrella of fear which is against the Creator. Whatever the reason get rid of it so that you can do what you are destined to do in life.

WHATEVER..Don't wait for things to feel good to make a change when you need to do something...

The economy is bad at the moment and we don't know when things will change for the better. We have a new President Elect Obama and we are putting all hope in him to make a change. NO.... To a people who have been ignored, victimized, oppressed and depressed -this economy have not allowed the majority of us to have the best but we have survived. What we can't afford is to wait for things to start feeling good or our new elected president to take office before we start changing our attitude, position and do what we know to do to make this a better place for us and ours. Elect Barack Obama need us to help make changes for the better for all of us- no matter what belief, creed or color.

There are people who may have good intentions for your life but they may be hindering you instead of helping you to reach your destiny in life. Sometimes it takes some bumps and bruises to get us to do what we need to do and be where need to be in life. It is not always a bad thing that a person hits rock bottom- it may not feel good granted, but if hitting rock bottom is what it takes for you to wake up and get your life together then it is all good. If you are continuously being protected from every thing that can or may go wrong -you will not grow to your full potential. Your creativity will cease to exist or be impeded at best.

You must be in harmony with the universe. It is difficult to get anything accomplish with disharmony. If you are in discord, angry, and or withdrawn you are fighting against the source to produce or be productive in positive things that are at your command. It is true that disappointments, anger and lack of can propel one to fight to get whatever but you have to know the difference between that which holds and that which moves you. Do you.

- approach it with a positive attitude- speak words of how you want things to be and not how they appear to be. After all, things are not always what they appear to be.

It is unfortunate that some people let words of others stop them, or situations and circumstances discourage them from moving forward in life . Words are powerful. Sticks and stones can break your bones and words can harm you. You are in control over what enters into your mind and spirit. Stop the negativity of others from destroying you by refusing to accept, believe or acknowledging words that are not in your best interest. In Ephesians it states that you should not give place to the devil which means don't give negativity an arena in your life to attempt to bring you down.

When you face problems don't continuously dwell on that problem no matter how monstrous or overbearing it may appear. If you have done all you know to do to resolve a problem and then some- stop. Say to yourself, "whatever" and move on. Looking at the situation or condition instead of concentrating on the answer will only delay the manifestation of what you are anticipating. Free your mind of worry and your solution will appear.
